Joins Over 900 Women Participants in First Annual Event
PHILADELPHIA, Pa., August 3, 2007 – Margie Shapiro, professional triathlete from Annandale, VA will join more than 900 female triathletes at the starting line of Sunday’s first annual Ameriprise Financial SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon. Shapiro won the overall ITU World Age Group Championship in 2005, the same year she was named USA Triathlon’s Female Age Group Athlete of the Year. She was also the overall women’s winner of the 2005 Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon, which is organized by the same group that puts on the Ameriprise Financial SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon.
The first annual Ameriprise Financial SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon will premiere on Sunday, August 5, 2007 at 8 am in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. Athletes from 19 states and even one woman from Israel will be racing. In only its first year, the race is already one of the largest all-female triathlons in the United States, and is the first in a series of SheROX triathlons to roll out in other key markets over the next few years.
The Ameriprise Financial SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon is produced by Philadelphia Triathlon, LLC, organizers of the highly acclaimed Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon in Fairmount Park. The race includes a .8K (.5 mile) swim, 25K (15.5 mile) bike and a 5K (3.1 mile) run. There will be a pre-race Women’s Health & Lifestyle Expo on Saturday, August 4 from 9 am – 5 pm at Lloyd Hall, 1 Boathouse Row in Philadelphia featuring women’s health and fitness exhibitors along with triathlon-related activities. Special Expo activities include:
• "Take ATest Drive For Cancer Research"; race sponsor Lincoln Mercury will be raising funds for the race’s charitable beneficiary, the Teal Ribbon Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. For every Expo guest or registered participant who takes a test drive from the Expo between 9 am and 4 pm, Lincoln Mercury will donate $25 to the TROCRF.
• Cow bell sales; friends and family members can purchase Ameriprise Financial SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon cow bells to support their athlete on race day. All proceeds from cow bell sales go to the Teal Ribbon Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.
• An Inspiration Station offered by Boundless Philadelphia where friends and family can create personalized buttons supporting their favorite racer.
• Race participants and attendees can also share their dreams at the Ameriprise Financial booth. Dreams will be displayed on the Ameriprise Financial dream wall throughout the Expo and on race day.
The Expo is open to the public.
The race starts with a swim in the Schuylkill River, followed by the bike leg that runs on and around Martin Luther King Drive, followed by a run along Martin Luther King Drive. The best spectator locations will be near the Transition Area and Finish Line on Martin Luther King Drive near Black Road, the Falls Bridge area and the Strawberry Mansion Bridge.
