The 2007 Canadian Duathlon Championships will take place on Saturday September 15th in the beautiful Township of Seguin, located just south of downtown Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada. Situated 2 hours north of Toronto and 5 hours west of Ottawa, this region is known for its picturesque Muskoka setting and for being the jewel of the 30,000 islands. The town of Parry Sound lies on Georgian Bay, which was originally formed when glaciers receded over top of the large Canadian Shield. Over the years, the wonderful setting of the area has been a popular subject by many artists, including the Group of Seven and many others. Today, the area is an attractive cottage destination with its population increasing to over 75,000 in the summer months. Athletes with family and friends will enjoy Northern Ontario’s beauty at the 2007 Canadian Duathlon Championships
The races will take place in and around the streets of the Foley Agricultural Hall, which is located at 60 Rankin Lake Road, Parry Sound, Ontario. Each year the hall is host to the Foley Fall Fair, which will now hold the Canadian Championships and Pan American Duathlon events for the first time. The duathlon specific feature race is the International distance age group Duathlon, a 10km run, followed by a 40km bike, then a 5km run to finish. This challenging Canadian Championship race will offer 12 qualifying spots per age group, which are based on 5 year increments for the ITU World Duathlon Championship in Rimini, Italy on September 27th - 28th of 2008.
Some other duathlon events that will take place on Saturday September 15th, will be a fun Sprint Distance Duathlon (5km run, 20km bike, 2.5km run) for those athletes who enjoy a fun shorter distance challenge. The Pan American Duathlon race will take place on Saturday afternoon, featuring some of Canada’s best Duathletes competing in a very exciting draft legal race, and the $3,000 prize purse. Canada’s up and coming competitive under 19 athletes will be challenging themselves in the Junior Canadian Duathlon Championships, hoping to be Canada’s next big talent. Lastly, there will be fun relay competitions for both the International Distance and Sprint Distance races. These relay competitions are intended for teams of three athletes to challenge themselves in a friendly athletic event and of course, bragging rights.
Some on site features for the athletes include, bike maintenance by Bialkowski Trysport, post race lunch by the Foley Agricultural Society, massage therapy from Barrett Massage, Naturopathic treatments from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, action race photography by A Shot on Site Digital Photography, ELOAD sports drink and Gels, an opening ceremony and pasta party on Friday September 14, and plenty more to come. The event, which is an OAT (Ontario Association of Triathletes) and Triathlon Canada sanctioned event, will provide athletes and spectators a safe, exciting event.
Athletes, volunteers, spectators, sponsors and friends are invited to enjoy a wonderful weekend full of sport and enjoyment. For any additional information, please feel free to contact Steve Wyrozub at info@swyft.c and visit the race website at www.swyft.ca.
