COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – Last weekend, professional triathlete Heather Gollnick, who is coached by Carmichael Training System’s Tim Crowley, won the inaugural Ironman Louisville, Kentucky triathlon in a time of 9:32:22. After exiting the swim portion of the race, approximately four minutes down from the race leader, she methodically worked her way to the front on the bike leg. At mile 78, she rode into first place and remained there through the bike portion and the entire 26.2-mile run to the finish. The result continues an outstanding season for the mother of three boys from Bradenton, Florida; in addition to her commanding win in Louisville, Kentucky, she notched a first place finish in the Ironman distance in Arizona and second place in New Zealand.
Overall, this win at Louisville is Gollnick’s fifth Ironman title. The other victories came at Wisconsin (twice), Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and the aforementioned Arizona. Like Louisville, Gollnick won the inaugural races at Wisconsin in 2002 and Coeur d’Alene in 2003. The results pay tribute to the meticulous scouting and course-specific training that Gollnick, along with coach Crowley, develop for each race.
Over the next several weeks, Gollnick will prepare for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii on October 13th. When asked how she was going to handle training for the race in Kona so soon after winning in Louisville, Gollnick deflected the question and said, "It’s amazing how much more training you can get done now that the kids are in school."
