Athletics: Tuesday morning session Team USA quotes

Women's hammer throw qualifying

Brittany Riley (Carbondale, IL): I couldn't seem to put it on the right side of the cage. The first one went into the cage, on the second one it hit the ground in the cage. It's disappointing.

Kristal Yush (Baton Rouge, LA): It was a little rough. It started coming together on my second and third throws. It's not the day I was looking for. It was a good experience. It's really neat to be in there with all the big time throwers in the event. It was an eye-opener, too.

Jessica Cosby (Mission Hills, CA): I'm pleased with how I performed today. It was my first world championships and I'm going to take this experience and go back home and prepare and work harder and try to get on that Olympic team, and hopefully the experience I've gained here will help me out next year.

Men's 400m first round

Jeremy Wariner (Waco TX): I felt good. I shut it down at the 250 [meter mark], so we'll see about tomorrow. I'm just ready to go in the semis. I was ready to go last night. [On the weather]: "This is nothing to me. I train in this every day."

Angelo Taylor (Decatur, GA): "It went all right. I did what I wanted to do, run the first 200. I was relaxed coming home. I felt a little sluggish. It was tough waking up this early in the morning. I got adjusted [to the time difference] just a couple of days ago and started sleeping in. But all in all, I felt good.

LaShawn Merritt (Suffolk, VA): It went well. I got out a little bet to set myself up. The Swedish guy was running some, so I had to run him down. I wanted the win. I ran faster than I wanted to coming into the last 100. I hit it a little bit. [Started running fast.] Come the final, I'm gonna put my race together and lay it on the track. I approach it like, 'I can do this.'

Men's 200m first round

Tyson Gay (Fayetteville, AR): I felt pretty sluggish. I didn't want to run that fast, but my competitors are tough and they gave me a tough run for the first round.

Wallace Spearmon (Fayetteville, AR): It was rough. I was hurting, but I'm fine. I've just got to work a little bit harder.

Rodney Martin (Los Angeles, CA): It was pretty easy. It was the first round.
