Athletics: Toronto, Take Your Marks...Runners from Around the World to Root and Run for 50 Charities at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon

Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon organizers and athletes will celebrate the start of Toronto's premier running event and charity challenge at the opening of the Runner's Expo this Friday at Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

International Team Challengers from Team Canada, Mexico, Peru, Great Britain and Team America/USA will be on hand with last year's winner and course record holder Daniel Rono of Kenya. Rono will try to break the 31-year-old record time of 2:09:55 for the $20,000 cash bonus for the new All-comers record.

Highlighting other elite and celebrity athletes are Simon Njoroge of Kenya, women's elites Asha Gigi and Merima Denboba of Ethiopia, Michal "The Joggler" Kapral and Royal Canadian Air Farce's Alan Park.

More than 12,000 runners from 35 countries and 40 U.S states will enjoy Canada's fastest, flattest marathon course on Sunday. The weekend also includes the Scotiabank Group Charity Challenge, a series of community events raising about $750,000 for more than 50 neighbourhood charities. In its second year of growing success is the Scotiabank MarathonKIDS program, a project promoting active and healthy lifestyles from a young age.
