US National Champions Start Cyclocross Season Strong and Fit
Colorado Springs, CO – CTS Athletes and US National Cyclocross Champions Ryan Trebon and Katie Compton showed off their stars-and-stripes jerseys in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the inaugural Excel Sports Cross Vegas event held in conjunction with the Interbike trade show.
Trebon won the elite men's race ahead of Swiss national champion Christian Heule, who beat the Kona pro twice last weekend in cyclocross races in Washington, DC. CTS Premier Coach Jim Lehman commented, "Ryan's feeling very good, but it's still very early in the cyclocross season and he's really conscious of the fact that his biggest goals are still a few months away." Three-time US National Cyclocross Champion Katie Compton finished second to Canadian national champion Lyne Bessette under the lights in Las Vegas. Compton and Bessette went head-to-head a few times last season, and the US champion was impressed with Bessette’s early-season form. She told Mark Zalewski of cyclingnews.com, "Lyne is definitely riding stronger now than she has in the past and her power is looking really good." Prior to leaving for Las Vegas, Compton, who is both a CTS athlete and coach, easily won a local elite women’s cyclocross race in Colorado Springs, Colorado last weekend.
Katerina Nash, a CTS Athlete coached by CTS Premier Coach Dean Golich, finished third in the elite women’s race, just 36 seconds behind Compton. Nash, who races mountain bike and cyclocross events for the LUNA Pro Cycling team, is a three-time Olympian, twice for cross-country skiing and once for mountain biking.
