Athletics: TransCanada 10K Canadian Championship tomorrow in Ottawa

OTTAWA - Athletics Canada's TransCanada Run with the Champions 10K will take place tomorrow morning in the nation's capital. Run with the Champions features a mass participation component giving the opportunity for anybody to come out and run with Canada's best. The event also comprises the Canadian 10km road race championship, Canadian 10km wheelchair road race championship and the Timex road race series finale.

Awards will also be handed out to the top male and female finishers in 11 different age categories as well as to the top male and female finishers in the High School Challenge. Prizes will be awarded to random race participants as they cross the finish line.

Top contenders

· In the men's Canadian Championship category, Matthew McInnes from Toronto can't be ignored as a medal threat. McInnes is the current Canadian marathon champion. Calvin Staples from Waterloo, ON should also contend, Staples was 3rd at the 2007 marathon nationals.

· Tara Quinn-Smith from Waterdown, ON finished 8th in 2006 at the Commonwealth Games in the 10000 metres and in that same year won the Canadian 10000 metres championship. Beth Wightman from Toronto comes in as the reigning Canadian cross country champion and finished in 3rd place at the track and field championships in the 5000 metres.

· Chantal Petitclerc from Montreal in the women's Open Wheelchair Canadian Championship. Petitclerc is a multiple Paralympic and World champion and recently won gold at the World Championships in the 1500 metres demonstration event.

Registration for the event is still available online at Events Online or you can register in person Friday from 4:00pm until 8:00pm at The Marriott Ottawa and Saturday from 7:00am to 9:00am in front of the Canadian War Museum.
