Each WMM champion awarded $500,000
The World Marathon Majors crowned its inaugural male and female champions on Monday, November 5 at a ceremony held in New York City. The two-year, 11-race series concluded on Sunday at the ING New York City Marathon where Gete Wami of Ethiopia finished second to earn the final points needed to clinch the series women's title over Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia. Earlier, Robert K. Cheruiyot of Kenya secured the men's title with three victories during the two-year competition.
"I'm so happy to be the first World Marathon Majors winner," said the 32-year-old Wami. "I came to New York to win the jackpot, and I did it."
Each WMM champion received $500,000 for accumulating the most points in the series which included marathons in Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York as well as this summer's IAAF World Championships Marathon in Osaka, Japan.
