Athletics: Cross Country Hogs Conclude Season with NCAA Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Arkansas cross country finished the season with the running of the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Monday. The Hogs scored 470 points to finish in 23rd place. The Oregon Ducks won the men’s race with 85 points. Josh McDougal of Liberty was the overall race champion with a time of 29:22.4. For the third time this season, Shawn Forrest was the Hogs’ top finisher. Running in his final cross country race as a Razorback, Forrest finished 52nd overall with a 10K time of 30:42.2. Matt Munoz, ending his Razorback career on Monday, was Arkansas’ second finisher and 64th overall with a time of 30:49.4. Chris Barnicle, running in his first NCAA Cross Country Championship race, was the third Hog to cross the line finishing 108th overall (31:10.3). Tyler Hill, also running his last cross country race in cardinal and white, was fourth on the team and 174th overall with a time of 31:42.0. Scott MacPherson was the fifth scorer in 183rd-place and a time of 31:48.4. Also competing for Arkansas were freshmen Lane Boyer (215th; 32:27.6) and Duncan Phillips (248th; 34:35.0). Forrest, Hill and Munoz ran in their final cross country races as Razorbacks today. Forrest has two seasons of track left, Hill will be a senior on the track during the 2008 season and Munoz has exhausted his eligibility. Arkansas made its 38th appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday. The Hogs have captured an NCAA-record 11 national championships including three-straight in 1998-2000. Arkansas has also earned five second-place finishes, four third-place showings and four fifth-place outings. Arkansas’ 23rd-place finish is the lowest since a 27th-place finish in 1974. 470 points are the most scored since 482 in 1977 when the Hogs finished 21st.
