Athletics: Reese named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Brittney Reese of Ole Miss has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the women's high jump and long jump Saturday at the Arkansas State Kickoff Classic in Jonesboro, Ark.

The 2007 NCAA long jump champion as a sophomore, Reese achievedautomatic NCAA qualifying marks in the high jump and the long jump as she claimed individual titles in both events last weekend in Jonesboro. She posted a mark of 1.86 meters/6 feet 1.25 inches in the high jump before leaping 6.45m/21-2.25 in the long jump.

The SEC Women's Field Athlete of the Year, Reese competed for Team USA in the long jump at the 2007 World Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Osaka, Japan, where her personal-best jump of 6.83m/22-5 in the qualifying round earned her a spot in the final. She was the top U.S. finisher in the event, placing eighth.

Now in its sixth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
