A talented group of civic-minded individuals with backgrounds
in event management, sales, engineering, local government
operations, education and charitable giving are developing a
national destination marathon/half marathon here in downtown
Indianapolis, IN. The core goals are to develop a well
organized, well supported marathon and half marathon; to
help others lead a healthier lifestyle through exercise; and to
help Indianapolis youth improve their quality of life including
pursuing higher education. The Indianapolis Monumental
Marathon is currently pursuing not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) status
to help achieve its goals.

Board of Directors: Carlton Ray, Steve Kerr, Mark Rinehart,
John Mcilvried, Tom Hathaway, Keith Cheney, Karen Koons,
Aaron Moody and Brigadier General J. Stewart Goodwin.
Course Highlights: The race highlights a number of downtown
features and lovely neighborhoods. The Indianapolis
Monumental Marathon course highlights include: the Indiana
State Capitol, Arts Garden, Lucas Oil Stadium, Circle Center
Mall, Warehouse District, Eli Lilly Headquarters, Monument
Circle, Federal buildings / monuments, the Massachusetts
Avenue District, the course will feature beautiful
neighborhoods and streets including Pennsylvania Avenue
through Fall Creek Place, Meridian Street, Washington
Boulevard, Meridian-Kessler, Butler University, and the
Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Half-marathoners will follow the marathoners for the first
seven miles at which time they will separate, then rejoin the
marathoners again at their 8˝ mile mark and the marathoners
at their 22˝ mile mark.
Both courses will be USATF sanctioned and certified with the
marathon course a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
Scoring & Timing: Will be performed in-house by Ken
Long & Associates. We will be using the DAG timing chip. We
have been using this system with great success for the last 2
years. The chip is attached to the bib number – one single
product for timing and identification. The chip is disposable,
therefore after crossing the finish line, participants will not
have to stop for chip removal. This provides a cool-down
period for the finisher and eliminates back-ups and makes it
safer and easier for medical personnel to spot anyone in
trouble.
Field Limit: The marathon and half-marathon will be limited
to a combined 5,000 for 2008 with the goal of becoming a “top
30 marathons” listed on the MarathonGuide.com. Click on
2007 USA Marathon Annual Report.
Awards: A purse of $10,800 cash for awards for the
marathon has been budgeted. Additional awards will also be
available.
