Triathlon: Ironman China Confirms Course

Haikou 14 March 2008 - Officials have confirmed the race day routes for both Ironman China presented by K-Swiss and CLSA Ironman 70.3 China presented by K-Swiss.

As originally posted on www.ironmanchina.com, the bike route comprises a 90km loop, which is repeated for the Ironman China racers. Athletes competing in the CLSA Ironman 70.3 China will under take one loop.

“We are confident that this course will give riders a great experience” says Race Director Tinny Tung.

Roads are new, 2-3 lanes wide and smooth for the bulk of the bike loop, which organisers and course testers believe will be a mostly fast Ironman course. A 10km section two-thirds through the loop takes athletes off the highways and city boulevards through charming old-world China. Mud brick and rock buildings abut the road in Shi Shan, the first of two farming villages on the course, making an exciting passage. The streets are expected to be lined with farmers, stall holders and cheering children come race day.

A recent trial by the Shanghai Triathlon Club called the course itself the true drawcard for triathletes who are looking for something different. Club members report that “the only real climb is after the second village, which is a 400m push [on the way to the Scenic Crater Park] and forces riders to focus after the village distractions.”

Ironman China and the CLSA Ironman 70.3 China are on 20 April 2008.
