Nelson named USOC Athlete of the Month

The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) on Tuesday announced that shot putter Adam Nelson has been named the organization's male Athlete of the Month for February.

A two-time Olympic silver medalist, Nelson (Charlottesville, Va.) opened the month on February 1 with a personal best at the 101st Millrose Games, where his mark of 22.07 meters/72 feet 5 inches, broke the Madison Square Garden and meet record. Two weeks later, he launched a world-leading throw of 22.40 meters/73 feet 6 inches, to win the men's shot put at the 2008 Tyson Invitational on February 15 in Fayetteville, Ark. That distance is the third-best performance of all time. For his efforts, the four-time World Outdoor Championships medalist earned the title of 2008 USATF Indoor Men's Visa Championship Series champion, and a $25,000 paycheck.

Additional USOC awardees for February include Lindsey Vonn of U.S. Skiing and the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton World Championship Team.
