Gerrit Schellens, the reigning Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa champion, has had to withdraw from the race due to an injury. Schellens, of Belgium, has a stress fracture in his foot and doctors have advised him to reframe from racing for six weeks. A disappointed Schellens will however still be flying out to South Africa to support fellow Ironman athletes.
The two times Spec-Savers Ironman SA champion was preparing to add a third title to his list of achievements at this years event and the public were looking forward to see another head-to-head between himself and South Africa’s favourite triathlete Raynard Tissink. Tissink, who has been eager to reclaim his title, still has a battle on his hands due to the strong Pro field at this year’s Ironman SA.
Ladies champion, Natasha Badmann or “Swiss Miss” as she is affectionately known, is out of action as well due to a shoulder injury she sustained while racing at the World Championships in Kona, Hawaii last year. Badmann is a favourite with the Port Elizabeth public but has expressed a desire to return, fully fit, to next year’s race.
The exciting news is that two new champions will be crowned at the 2008 Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa. The chase for the titles will make for an exhilarating day of racing and all eyes will be on the race!
