Wednesday, April 09, 2008

OTTAWA – Athletics Canada announced today the 2008 edition of Team 2012, the athlete identification program for the 2012 Olympic Games.  The program also serves to encourage developing athletes to transition to high performance teams, and recognize coach / athlete partnerships required to achieve world class success.

Initiated in 2007, Team 2012 evolves on a yearly basis to eventually closely resemble the team which will be named to compete at the London Games.

The program contains three categories of recognition:

  • Gold – Athletes born in 1980 or later identified on the Road to Excellence program as targeted athlete or carded under the “international” criteria
  • Silver – Carded athletes part of the national team program born in 1982 or later, with exceptions for 1981 birthdays members of a major national team.
  • Bronze – Athletes nominated by their provincial branch and who display evidence of national and international competition success born in 1984 or later, with exceptions for athletes part of a targeted event born in 1982.
