Athletics Canada is proud to help spread the word of the launch of Feel the Rush 2008, a Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) campaign celebrating summer and winter Paralympic sports. The objective is to increase the number of Canadians with a disability who feel the rush of confidence and empowerment that comes with enjoying sport, and some of whom will continue on to become high performance athletes to support Canada retain its top medal winning position at future Paralympic Games.
At the heart of the Feel the Rush campaign is www.feeltherush.ca, a destination for persons with a disability to learn about the sports best suited to their abilities and interests, and to locate national, provincial, or local sporting associations.
Feeltherush.ca currently features long jumper Andrea Holmes inspiring journey. Andrea from Vancouver, BC was born without the lower portion of her leg and was interested in sport very early on in life. The Salt Lake City Paralympic Games inspired her to set an objective of competing at the Paralympic Games and she realized her goal at the 2004 Paralympics by competing in the long jump in the T44 class (single below knee amputation). Andrea is now training to make the 2010 Canadian Paralympic team in alpine skiing.
You can also download posters at www.feeltherush.ca which feature a number of Paralympic sports. The athletics poster features Stefanie Reid from Windsor, ON who won silver and bronze at the 2007 Parapanamerican Games in the long jump and 200 metres respectively in the F44/T44 class. Stefanie holds the Canadian record in her class in the 100, 200 and long jump.
