Vancouver (April 20, 2008) —Neither the threat of cold or rain could contain the excitement of the start and the exhilaration of the finish for what turned out to be great running weather at the 2008 Vancouver Sun Run. It was a triumphant celebration of health, fitness and community spirit with another registration record shattered.
With 59,179 registered for the 24th edition of the Vancouver Sun Run presented by HSBC Canada, it was a significant increase from the previous record set last year of 54,317.
Festus Langat from Kenya was first in, claiming top place in the Men’s Overall Division with the time of 29:26. Finishing second was Philip Koech of Kenya with his time of 29:36. Running third overall and Top Canadian Male was Ryan Hayden from Surrey, BC with a time of 29:38.
In the Women’s Overall Division, Genet Gebregiorgis from Ethiopia took first place honors with a time of 33:35 beating Lisa Harvey of Calgary, AB who finished second with a time of 33:58. Harvey also claimed the Top Canadian Female title. Kirsty Smith from Victoria, BC placed third female overall with her time of 34:12.
The Vancouver Sun Run, presented by HSBC Bank Canada, is the 2nd largest timed 10K in the world and the 3rd largest timed run of any distance in the world. The prize purse of $21,000 is allocated as follows: top three Overall Male and Female - $3,000, $1,000 and $500. Top five Canadian Male and Female - $2,000, $1,000, $750, $500, and $250. Top three Male and Female Overall Masters win $750, $500 and $250.
