Arkansas' McDonnell announces retirement

University of Arkansas cross country and track and field head coach John McDonnell, who in 36 years at Arkansas made it the winningest program in NCAA history, has announced he is retiring following the 2008 outdoor track and field season. He leaves a legacy that includes 42 NCAA championships and 83 conference titles.

In 2005, McDonnell was inducted into USA Track & Field's Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a coach. He has coached 23 Olympians, including a gold, silver and bronze medalist, 105 NCAA individual event champions and 331 individual event conference champions. His 42 national team titles are more than any coach in any sport in the history of collegiate athletics. His teams won five national triple crowns, 20 conference triple crowns and 34 consecutive cross country conference championships. McDonnell has been named national, regional or conference coach of the year a total of 140 times. He also served as Team USA's middle distance coach for the 2003 IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
