(RRW) Athletics: Famiglietti Breaks Penn Relays Record

The 114th Penn Relays kicked off last night at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field with a rousing performance in the men's steeplechase by American Anthony Famiglietti. The 29 year-old Olympian ran 8:24.24 to break the meet record and take down the Franklin Field record of 8:24.86 set by James Munyala of the University of Texas - El Paso at the 1976 NCAA Championships.

In other distance action, Princeton's Liz Costello won the college women 3000m "championship" section in 9:35.01; Princeton's Ashley Higginson won the college women 5000m "championship" section in 16:22.56 over Yale's Lindsay Donaldson (16:24.01); Maria-Elana Calle won the Olympic development section of the 5-K in 16:25.09; NC State's Stephen Furst got a narrow victory over Queens' Daniel Kanyaruhuru in the college men's 5000m "championship" heat, 13:49.19 to 13:49.29; Samuel Chelanga won the Olympic development 5000m in 13:51.40 and was the only man to break 14 minutes in that section; Toni Wiszowaty of Plattsburgh won the women's 10,000m in 33:57.46, the only sub-34:00 performance of the evening; Evans Kigen of Liberty University won the men's 10,000m in 29:16.12; the University of Florida's Lindsay Sundell won the college women's steeplechase in 10:18.51

This mega-meet continues today, concluding on Saturday. Live television coverage is available in the United States on ESPN on Saturday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
