Athletics: World Recordholder Shaheen, Prep Phenom Price Enter Pre Classic

Eugene, Oregon--He is the long-time dominant runner in his event. She is a 17-year-old wunderkind just starting her international career. World steeple recordholder Saif Shaheen of Qatar has joined the illustrious field in the Prefontaine Classic 2-Mile at Hayward Field, while newly-minted National High School Federation recordholder Chanelle Price of Pennsylvania has been added to the Pre Classic 800 field on June 8th. Price takes the place of Jamaica's Kenia Sinclair, who is a scratch.

Shaheen, who hasn't lost in his signature event since 2002, set the world record in the steeple of 7:53.62 in Brussels in 2004. He is twice a gold medalist in the World Championships steeple in 2003 and 2005. But his credentials in racing without barriers are also superb, as he rates among history's 10 fastest 5000 men ever at 12:48.21, making him the fastest man in the Pre 2-Mile field! With his blistering kick, he definitely adds spice to a field that already includes Bernard Lagat, Craig Mottram, and Paul Koech.

Price has a personal best of 2:02.38, set in the finals of the USA Championships last summer. She has been winning her prep races this year by huge margins, and the Pre Classic 800 will be the first race of the year where she doesn't have to do the bulk of the pace-work herself. The venerable national prep mark of 2:00.07 by Kim Gallagher in 1982 is in jeopardy.
