Next weekend sees the annual Triathlon World Championships in Vancouver, Canada. In recent years Britain has had notable success on the international stage with Tim Don, Will Clarke and Alistair Brownlee all winning World titles in 2006, and Hollie Avil taking the World Junior Championships last year.
Olly Freeman, a former European Junior Champion, is the sole representative in the senior men’s competition as having focussed on the Madrid World Cup in a bid to earn Olympic Selection, the likes of Tim Don, Will Clarke and Stuart Hayes are taking a short rest from long haul travel and competition and will resume their racing at the Des Moines World Cup on 22 June.
A stacked women’s field includes recent world cup silver medallist Helen Tucker and the experienced Liz Blatchford. Glasgow’s Kerry Lang was Britain’s top finisher at the European Championships a few weeks ago in Portugal whilst Abbie Thorrington and Vanessa Raw have enjoyed good results on the European Cup circuit.
2006 World Junior Champion, Alistair Brownlee, will contest the Under 23 race whilst his younger brother, Jonathan, will look to emulate his sibling’s success in the Junior Boy’s competition following a bronze medal at the European Championships.
European Junior silver medallist, Kirsty McWilliam, will hope to maintain Britain’s continued success in the Junior World Championships following victories for Brownlee and Avil over the past two years.
