OTTAWA – The Canadian 10000 metres Championships take place tonight at the University of Toronto Varsity Centre on John L. Davenport Track. The 25 lap event begins with the women at 8:30pm followed by the men’s race at 9:15pm.

Unionville, Ontario’s Beth Wightman will be going for her second consecutive 10000 metre women’s title; she won the 2007 edition by setting a personal record of 33:30.52. She will face some stiff competition from Winnipeg Manitoba’s Andrea Grove-McDonough who holds a personal best over the distance of 32:29.69.

The men’s race will feature Eric Gillis of Antigonish, NS who will also line up to defend his title with Canadian 10 kilometre road race champion Dylan Wykes of Kingston, ON hot on his heels.

The Championships serve as the selection trials for the 2008 NACAC Under-23 Championships in Toluca, Mexico, July 18-20. They also serve as the selection trials for the 10000 metre event at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
