(Duluth, Minn.) The Grandma’s Marathon-Duluth, Inc. Board of Directors has approved the purchase of the building that serves as the organization’s headquarters, race officials announced today.
“The decision to purchase this property serves to secure our future as well as our long-term commitment to this area. This location is extremely valuable to our staff, volunteers and visitors, but also to the community as a whole.” said John Foschi, board chairperson.
The nonprofit organization’s 17-member board recently adopted a resolution to purchase the property and building from A&L Properties.
“We are dedicated to Duluth and the other communities we serve. Becoming a permanent fixture in the Canal Park area is an important step in our continuing efforts to develop our events and programs,” said Scott Keenan, the organization’s executive director.
Grandma's Marathon headquarters has been located at 351 Canal Park Drive, less than 100 yards from the finish line of Grandma’s Marathon and the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, since 1996 when the organization relocated from Fitger’s and began leasing the space from A&L Properties.
“This is a very exciting moment in the history of Grandma’s Marathon, but it would not have been possible without the vision from Rob Link, Lee Anderson and all of our friends at A&L Properties. We share the same passion for making Duluth the very best it can be, and both parties were committed to making this happen,” said Keenan.
“Scott Keenan and I have had a good relationship for more than 20 years. My primary motivation for selling this building was out of respect and consideration for Scott and for the event itself. We believe in supporting our community and Grandma’s Marathon is one of the best things to ever happen to this community.” said Rob Link of A & L Properties.
In 2005, A & L Properties performed a major renovation and construction project on the building, increasing the total space to 4,500 square feet, more than doubling the previous size. The expansion created a conference room, storage areas and additional work space for Grandma’s Marathon, which will host its 32nd annual event in Duluth this weekend.
“The board and staff are constantly seeking new ways to enhance and expand what this organization provides to the community. For us, this is the ultimate race improvement.” added Foschi.
Nearly 18,000 runners are registered to participate in this weekend’s three-race event. An additional 50,000 fans and family members are expected to take part in the festivities surrounding the 32nd annual Grandma’s Marathon weekend.
