Athletics: Tyler Daniel Harper sixth in men’s 400 final at world junior track and field championships

BYDGOSZCZ, Poland – Tyler Daniel Harper of Brampton, Ont., finished sixth in the men’s 400-metre final on Thursday at the world junior track and field championships.

Marcus Boyd of the U.S., won the race in 45.53 seconds with Kirani James of Grenada second in 45.70 and O’Neal Wilder of the U.S., third in 45.76. Harper, who qualified fifth in Wednesday’s semifinal, clocked sixth in 47.20.

In the women’s 3,000 steeplechase, Jessica Furlan of Regina clocked a personal best 10:16.32 to finish ninth. Christine Kambua Muyanga led Kenya to a 1-2 finish in 9:31.35.

Kimberly Hyacinthe of Lachenaie, Que., came agonizingly close to a berth in the women’s 200-metre final finishing third in her semifinal heat in 23.81 and missing a spot in the final eight by a mere 0.01 seconds.

In the women’s 400 hurdles, Sarah Wells of Unionville, Ont., missed the cut for the final by a half second finishing fifth in her semfinal heat.

Karelle Edwards of Ottawa qualified for the women’s 100-metre hurdles semifinal, set for Friday, finishing fifth in her opening heat in 14.01 just 0.02 off her personal best.

Competition continues through to Sunday.
