OMAHA -- 2007 World Youth team member Howard Shepard helped his Texas
Stars club to a scintillating win in the young men's 4x800 relay
Wednesday to cap off the second day of the 42nd USATF National Junior
Olympic Track & Field Championship at Burke High School. Shepard, who
represented Team USA in the 800 at Ostrava last year, teamed up with
Jodale Burkley, Eric Gosset and Sirron Warren to win in 7:37.58, just
over two seconds off the national youth record that has stood since
1981.
Two national youth records fell in multi-event competition, as Stacey
Destin of Boynton Beach, Fla., won the midget girls' pentathlon with
3,412 points, besting the previous record of 3,329 set in 2004 by Shanay
Briscoe. Victoria Powell of Montclair, N.J., set a national youth record
in the bantam girls' triathlon with a score of 1,460 points, 10 better
than the previous standard set in 2007 by Jaela Williams of the Rising
Stars.
