Athletics: Diane Roy wins Paralympic gold in wheelchair 5000 metres

OTTAWA – Diane Roy of Hatley, QC won Canada’s first athletics medal at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, China. Roy won gold in the women’s wheelchair 5000 metres (T54 classification) in a new personal best time of 11:54.03.

Kyle Pettey from Brampton, ON finished 10th in the men’s discus throw final. Pettey’s best throw was his first where he reached 30.26 metres, good for 770 points (F34 class). The event was won by Aigars Apinis of Latvia who recorded 1097 points on his last throw (20.47m World Record F52).

In other track and field action on Monday

· Jon Dunkerley of Ottawa, ON does not advance in the men’s 100m T11 – 3rd in Heat 2 – 12.12

· Jean Paul Compaore of Sherbrooke, QC advances in the men’s 400m T54 – 4th in Heat 3 – 49.42 Seasonal Best

· Colin Mathieson from Winnipeg, MB qualifies in the men’s 400m T54 – 4th in Heat 4 – 49.81

· Jason Dunkerley of Ottawa, ON does not advance in the men’s 800m T12 – 3rd in Heat 1 – 2:03.60 Seasonal Best

· Josh Cassidy of Port Elgin, ON advances in the men’s 5000m T54 – 4th in Heat 1 – 10:15.11 Seasonal Best

· Michel Filteau of St. Jean Baptiste, QC does not advance in the men’s 5000m T54 – 9th in Heat 2 – 11:01.20

· Mark Ledo from Maple, ON does not advance in the men’s 5000m T54 – 10th in Heat 3 – 11:30.43
