Triathlon: SheROX Charlotte Triathlon Inspires 500 Women to Compete on Sunday

Latta Plantation Park to host popular all-women’s triathlon series on September 14

September 9, 2008 – (Philadelphia, PA) – Women of all ages will swim, bike and run their way through Latta Plantation Park this weekend as the city welcomes the inaugural SheROX Charlotte Triathlon – the all-women’s triathlon created to inspire and motivate participants, volunteers and spectators.

Taking place Sunday, September 14, SheROX Charlotte will host competitive amateurs and eager first-timers who will compete in a true sprint distance triathlon which includes a .8K (.5 mile) swim, 27K (17 mile) bike, 5K (3.1 miles) run. The event features the region’s first all-women’s triathlon with an open water swim in Mountain Island Lake. With 500 women registered, SheROX Charlotte also holds the distinction of being the largest first-year women’s triathlon in the region.

Founded in 2007, the SheROX Triathlon Series was launched with the inaugural SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon. In 2008, the series added Charlotte and Tempe, AZ to the schedule. 2009 will see two more new cities to the Series. Each event in the SheROX Triathlon Series is sanctioned by USA Triathlon and designed to ensure that every participant feels a sense of personal satisfaction, accomplishment and empowerment. SheROX Charlotte is being produced with the assistance of Set Up Events, the leading race production company in the Mid-Atlantic region.

“We are very excited to host the inaugural SheROX Charlotte Triathlon this weekend in Latta Plantation Park,” said Barb McKeever, Race Director, SheROX Triathlon Series. “When we launched the SheROX Series last year, it became clear that there was a growing demand for a women’s triathlon series focused on the experience and the accomplishment. With Charlotte’s first women’s open water swim and our record breaking registration, it’s proof that there was a real desire for a more challenging and rewarding multisport opportunity. Charlotte has a booming population of female triathletes and we look forward to bringing a high-quality, well-organized and fun ‘SheROX Experience’ to Charlotte this weekend.”

The women’s market is the fastest growing segment in the sport of triathlon. According to USA Triathlon, USAT female membership has increased from 11 percent in the early 90s, to 37 percent today. The popularity of the SheROX Series mirrors national trends. SheROX Charlotte will host 500 women for this first year event while SheROX Philadelphia participants doubled from 700 last year to 1,500 for 2008.

The signature element of each SheROX Triathlon is its focus on cultivating a passion in women for the multi-sport lifestyle through the exclusive SheROX Mentor Program.

The complimentary SheROX Mentor Program pairs participants with an experienced and enthusiastic female triathlete who is passionate about the sport. Mentors provide information and support to help women feel comfortable about what to expect during training and on race day. Mentors are available via e-mail and proactively send regular tips and suggestions to address individual needs and concerns.

“The SheROX Mentor Program is what really sets us apart from other women triathlon series,” added McKeever. “SheROX Charlotte will be the first triathlon for more than 100 women who are registered. The goal with the Mentor Program is to ensure that these first-timers, and all of our participants, have a positive event experience from the time they started training until they cross the finish line on Sunday. Our mentors have done a terrific job of introducing these women to the multi-sport lifestyle.”

The SheROX Charlotte Triathlon will make a contribution to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training program. For more information on the SheROX Triathlon Series, please visit www.SheROXtri.com.
