Seaman, Vaill lead field at USA 5 km RW Champs
Ten-time USA Indoor 5 km RW champion Tim Seaman will lead the men's field Saturday at the 2008 USA 5km Race Walk Championships in Kingsport, Tennessee. The 5km championship race is a tradition-laden event, held in Kingsport for the 16th consecutive year.
2004 Olympian Teresa Vaill headlines the women's field. Vaill was the 2008 Olympic Trials runner-up, is a three-time USA Outdoor champion ('04, '05, '07), a seven-time USA Indoor champions ('84-'86, '89-'91, '08), and is a three-time U.S. women's 10 km RW champion.
The 5 km Championship will start at 8:00 a.m. ET, with the women's race up first. The men's race begins at 9:15 a.m. and the Awards Ceremony will start at 10:45.
The USA 5 km Race Walk Championship is the ninth stop on the 2008 USA Race Walking Grand Prix Series (USARWGP). The USA Race Walking Grand Prix, now in its 5th year, is an effort by USATF to crown an overall champion for each competitive year based upon the National Championship schedule of events. Races are contested from 1 mile to 50 kilometers for men and women.
Joyce sets American best at USA 8 km Champs
Monica Joyce (Ann Arbor, Mich.) set an American best time of 28 minutes 04 seconds for ages 50+, at the 2008 USA Women's 8 km Championship in Akron, Ohio. Joyce finished 20th overall in the championship, breaking the record of 28:55 set by Shirley Matson in 1991. This year's championship was held in conjunction with the Road Runner Akron Marathon on September 27, 2008.
Joyce's career highlights include representing Ireland in the 1984 Olympic Games and a 12th place finish at the 1985 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Joyce gained U.S. citizenship in 2000 and in 2008 made a comeback that included a 1st -place finish at the Boston High Performance Meet (5,000m) with a time of 16:01.
