Athletics: Beaumont-Courteau of Montreal wins Silver at Commonwealth Youth Games

OTTAWA – Ariane Beaumont-Courteau from Montréal, QC won Canada’s first track and field medal at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games held in Pune, India. Beaumont-Courteau’s best vault of 3.90-metres placed her second behind Jade Ive of England who recorded a new Games Record of 4.05-metres. Abigail Haywood of England rounded out the top three in the women’s pole vault with a best of 3.80-metres.

The multi-sport Commonwealth Youth Games started October 12th with Track and Field events beginning today, other Canadians in action were:

· Philip Hayle of Brampton, ON placed 8th in the men’s 100-metres final. Hayle crossed the line in 10.89 seconds.

· Andre Hamilton from Toronto, ON failed to advance out of the 400-metres semifinals. Hamilton was 5th in semifinal #2 in a time of 48.84 seconds.

· Derek Drouin of Corunna, ON advanced to the men’s high jump final. Drouin finished tied for first in qualification group A with a mark of 1.95-metres.

· Loudia Laarman of Lethbridge, AB just missed the podium finishing 4th in the women’s 100-metres final. Laarman stopped the clock at 11.95 seconds. Karlene Hurrell was 4th in semifinal #1 in a time of 12.35 seconds failing to advance to the final.

· Alyssa Johnson of Winnipeg, MB advanced to the women’s 400-metres final by finishing 2nd in semifinal #1 in a time of 55.72 seconds. Lauren Leon of Mississauga, ON failed to advance out of semifinal #2 finishing 6th in 57.34 seconds.

· Olivia Charnuski from Elmira, ON placed 6th in the women’s 100-metre hurdles final. Charnuski crossed the finish line in 14.74 seconds.

· Geneviève Lalonde of Moncton, NB and Jessica Parry of London, ON both advanced to the women’s 1500-metres final. Lalonde was 4th in heat 1 in a time of 4:25.66. Parry placed 3rd in heat 2 in 4:39.40.

· The men’s and women’s 4x100-metre relay teams both advanced to their respective finals. The men’s team won heat #2 in a time of 41.71 seconds to advance. The women’s team also won heat #2 finishing in 47.04 seconds.
