Triathlon: Six from U.S. Elected to ITU Leadership

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (December 8, 2008) -- The International Triathlon Union elected Marisol Casado of Spain as its next president and Canadian Loreen Barnett as the new secretary general at the organization's 21st Congress in Madrid, Spain last week.

The event also included the announcement of the ITU Executive Board and the election of members to several ITU committees. Six individuals from the United States were among those elected to leadership positions.

Former USA Triathlon Board Member Melissa Merson was elected to the Executive Board, while Joyce Donaldson (Technical), Doug Hiller (Medical), Gale Bernhardt (Constitution), Jon Beeson (Athletes with a Disability), and Candy Cheatham (Women's) were elected to ITU committees.

"Having so many qualified individuals within elected positions at ITU is an honor that we take very seriously," said USAT CEO Skip Gilbert. "Our goal is, and always will be, to continue to work closely with ITU in order to help expand the awareness and success of Olympic-style racing."

Complete election results are available at the ITU website.

With Merson being elected to this ITU position, she will be stepping down from the USAT Board of Directors, creating an open spot from the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Any current USAT annual member in good standing from the Mid-Atlantic Region may apply to fill that spot. The position will be filled based on a majority vote of the Board at its January meeting. The individual appointed would serve on the Board for 2009, but would have to run for re- election in 2009 if they wanted to serve in 2010.

Interested candidates should submit a platform statement of no more than 500 words, a brief résumé, and a passport-type photo to sharon@usatriathlon.org by December 26.
