(Big Bear Lake, CA) The community of Big Bear Lake will present 'Run The Bear -- Big Bear Lake Marathon' on Saturday, September 12, 2009. The event includes a variety of activities for participants of all ages and activity levels. All are set amidst the breathtaking beauty of the San Bernardino Mountains and in view of beautiful Big Bear Lake. A 26.2 mile (marathon) race, half marathon, 5K and Kid's Run (one mile) will be offered as well as a Cycle Tour. Each event provides an invigorating and rare opportunity to run or ride the wide open streets that caress the curves of Big Bear Lake. The course has been designed specifically to provide an inspiring challenge along some of the most scenic routes in the Valley.
The course also offers glimpses of the now famous running route of Big Bear's local Olympian, and fastest American born marathon runner in history, Ryan Hall. Hall was the only American to medal in this year's Boston Marathon, and began his distance running career by training along the shores of Big Bear Lake.
Big Bear Lake is just a few hours' drive from Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange and San Bernardino Counties and all surrounding major airports. It is Southern California's favorite and most accessible four season resort with an average of 300 days a year of sunshine. Ample outdoor activities are available for visitors including hiking, boat rentals, fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, a golf course and numerous scenic picnic areas. Run The Bear -- Big Bear Lake Marathon is the only full marathon in San Bernardino County and registration is open now. A portion of the entry fees will support The Lighthouse Project, Inc., and other local nonprofit agencies whose endeavors support the needs of children.
