3,200 runners took part in the 5th annual Medtronic TC 1 Mile on Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis
(Minneapolis, MN) –With a lightening-fast performance, David Torrence (23) of Oakland, CA broke the fourminute
time bounty with a first-place finishing time of 3:59.3 (unofficial). The first place finish means he
walked away with $14,000 in a race he predicted in a press conference earlier in the day. Wrestling for first
the last 100 yards, Jon Rankin left it all on the road coming in second with an unofficial time of 4:01.7 and
Bobby Curtis (23) of Philadelphia, PA finished third with a time of 4:02.0.
“This was a great start for the USA 1 Mile Road Championships,” said Jim Estes, USATF Associate Director
of Marketing and Long Distance Running Programs. “Thanks to the partnership with the Medtronic TC 1
Mile, it’s great to see an emerging star like David Torrence win a US title. Events like this are important
because it gives David and his fellow athletes the chance to step up and perform at the championship level.
The $10,000 bonus for breaking 4:00 on this course means a lot to an emerging athlete and he earned every
penny of it.”
Shannon Rowbury (24) of San Francisco, CA brings a second championship title from the race back to
California with her 4:33.4 finish, shy of the 4:28 bonus, but still picking up $4,000 for her first place finish.
Sara Hall finished second behind Rowbury, in a repeat of the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in April, finishing
in 4:39.1. And Sara Vaughn (23) of Boulder, CO finished in a close third at 4:41.3
Nearly 3,000 runners came out for the 5th annual Medtronic TC 1 Mile. Organizers say the great spring
weather really energized the field. “We had more than 1,000 runners in the first wave of the race tonight,”
said Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. executive director Virginia Brophy Achman. “It’s powerful to see that many
people running down the Nicollet Mall. We want to thank all the runners and spectators for coming out
tonight to help us celebrate the 5th annual Medtronic TC 1 Mile.”
There were 25 teams in the Corporate Team Challenge, and 25 states were represented.
