Triathlon: Helmer, Messoline Capture Amica 19.7 Mid Summer Triathlon

PROVIDENCE, RI -- Jeff Helmer was the top finisher at the Amica 19.7 Mid Summer Triathlon in Fairview, OR, on Sunday. The 23-year-old from Lynwood, WA, covered the 19.7 sprint distance in a winning time of 1:09:28

"The event was very well organized and the course was fantastic," said Helmer. "I enjoyed the 19.7 distance, as it allowed me to work on my bike splits and transitions to a 5K. I felt okay coming off the bike, but knew I had to lay down the hammer to win and that's what I did today."

shley Messoline of Lubbock, TX, was the top female in the sprint triathlon, which featured a half-mile open-water swim, a 16.1-bike and a 3.1-mile run. Messoline, 25, recorded a winning time of 1:19.20.

Nearly 700 athletes, ranging from 12 to 76 years old, competed in this weekend Amica Mid Summer Triathlon & Duathlon at Blue Lake Park. The two-day event featured a variety of races, including the Amica 19.7 Mid-Summer Sprint Triathlon, sprint duathlon and an Olympic distance triathlon.

The Amica 19.7 Mid-Summer Sprint Triathlon kicked off with the swim in Blue Lake, followed by the bike course, which went along Marine Drive. The race finished with the run course, consisting of one loop through Blue Lake Park and continuing along Marine Drive.

The Amica 19.7 Mid-Summer Sprint Triathlon is part of the 2010 Amica 19.7 Triathlon Series, a sprint distance series of events held throughout the country. It is the fifth stop of Amica's 10-event series, which culminates in Phoenix, AZ, in November.
