Speed River athletes had a record setting showing at this past weekend's Canadian Track and Field Championships. The club brought home nine medals in all, including gold medals in both the men's and women's steeplechase. The men also defended their National Team Title with an eight point win over the University of Toronto Track Club, while the women finished second overall falling to the Elite Edge club based in Toronto.
The highlight of the meet for the club was Alex Genest and Dana Buchanan's wins in the steeplechase, for both athletes it was their first ever Canadian Championship. Buchanan's time of 10 minutes 13.04 seconds also broke the Championship Record. Other medalist for the club included Rob Watson silver in the men's steeplechase and Reid Coolsaet's silver in the men's 10000 metres. The club also brought home five bronze medals, throwers Tim Hendry and Owen Willems both captured bronze in the shot put and discus respectively, while Hilary Stellingwerff and Taylor Milne both captured bronze medals in their respective 1500 metre races, Eric Gillis bronze in the men's 10000 metres rounded out the club's record haul.
