OTTAWA - Six Canadian track and field athletes have been selected to represent the Americas region this weekend at the two-day IAAF Continental Cup in Split, Croatia. The Americas (NACAC and Consudatle) will compete against continental teams from Africa, Europe and Asia / Pacific. The Continental Cup replaces the World Cup on the IAAF calendar.
The Americas team was selected by using the IAAF Top Lists as of July 31st with the exception of the 3000 metres which was selected from the IAAF Senior Top Indoor list as of March 31st. The competition format features two athletes per team (area) in each individual event. In the 1500m, 3000m, 3000m steeplechase and 5000m three athletes may enter, with only the top two scoring.
