The 2010 New Balance Vic Matthews Open promises to have a little extra luster this year as it will act as a preview for the OUA Cross Country Championships which will be hosted by the University of Guelph October 30th. The meet, which, beginning in 2009, was named after the long time Gryphon coach, has grown substantially over the past few years and now includes two community races, a free kids race and the two marquee events.
This year's women race promises to be very exciting with Gryphon star Genevieve Lalonde racing for the first time at home in a Gryphon singlet. Lalonde is coming off a record setting summer, which saw her break the Canadian Junior Record in the women's steeplechase on route to finishing sixth at World Junior Track and Field Championships. Hoping to challenge Lalonde will be Leslie Sexton of the London Runner Distance Club, who finished third at this summer's Canadian Track and Field Championships in the 5000 metres, and Lalonde's teammate Courtney Laurie who was sixth at the Championships in the 5000 metres.
On the team side, the University of Guelph women are the strong favourites heading into the competition, having won the past five Canadian University titles. Other teams expected to contend for the podium will be the University of Windsor, Queen's University and the University of Waterloo.
The Vic Matthews men's race promises to be a collision of young and old. The hometown Gryphons will be racing an experienced squad that includes Kyle Boorsma, in what will likely be his second to last race at home in the Gryphons singlet, and the highly anticipated debut of Alex Genest. The Gryphons main rivals, the Windsor Lancers, will bring in a young squad led by their superb recruit class of Jordan Collison, Andrew Degroot and Paul Janikowski. Last year the Guelph Alumni were able to knock of the Gryphon men in the annual challenge and this year's squad has added in recent grads Matt Brunsting and John Parrott in the hopes of repeating the feat. A resurgent Queens squad as well as strong teams from Waterloo, Toronto and the London Runner club will also hope to land on the podium.
All the action will get started tomorrow at 9:30 am with the Falling Leaves 5km Citizens race, which will be followed at 10:00 am by the Falling Leaves 7.5km race. The Speed River Xtreme Team Free Kids Race will be run at 11:00 am followed immediately by the New Balance Vic Matthews Open Women's race at 11:20 and the men's race at noon.
