OTTAWA -- The countdown to the 2011 World Championships and 2012 Olympic Games is officially on as Athletics Canada officially announced today the qualifying period and standards for the marathon and 50km race walk events to be contested at both of these events.
"The announcement today is consistent with Athletics Canada's high performance mandate and its commitment to effective communication related to National Programs," said Martin Goulet, Athletics Canada Chief High Performance Officer. Goulet adds, "Recognizing the specifics of these two events, we are especially pleased in delivering on our commitment to our marathoners and race walkers by communicating the qualifying information almost two years out of the 2012 Olympic Games. "
The qualifying period for the World Championships began January 1, 2010 and will conclude o May 29, 2011. The Olympic Games qualifying window opened as of September 1, 2010 and will close April 15, 2012.
While the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) qualifying period for the Olympic Games has not been officially announced, the above dates are consistent with those set for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Should the IAAF adjust these dates, Athletics Canada will adjust its criteria accordingly.
Selection Standards
| Men | Event | Women |
| 3:53:20 | 50km Racewalk | |
| 2:11:29 | Marathon | 2:29:55 |
Athletics Canada directly applies IAAF standards for most events, however in the spirit of consistency, has chosen to set its own standards for both the marathon and 50km racewalk. These adjustments are aligned with the organization's current carding criteria.
It is important to note that there will be no selection trials for these events; rather selection will be made based on rankings within the qualifying periods. Athletics is attempting, with partners, to support competitive opportunities for top athletes in both of these endurance events.
The final selection criteria for both the World Championships and Olympic Games will include a Rising Star criteria which would be discovered through performances in shorter events such as the 20km racewalk and the 10 000 metres.
