(RWire) Athletics: Sponsors Team Up with Big Sur Marathon's Facebook Fans




Contest rewards fans for checking out event's websites

Looking to win an ASICS gear bag loaded with GU packs, caps, coupons and more? Fans of the Big Sur Marathon's Facebook page will have multiple opportunities over the next several weeks to win a variety of prizes from the event's loyal and active sponsors.

The popular Facebook site, nearing 5,000 fans, has initiated a web-search contest to send fans deep into Big Sur's web pages. The contest offers three questions each week that require exploration into the Full and Half Marathon pages as well as Big Sur's Mud Run and JUST RUN sites. A total of 36 diverse questions ranges from learning the minimum ages required for Big Sur events to discovering course elevation gains to searching out the name of the artist who has painted the scenic watercolor images for Big Sur races. Winners are chosen randomly from correct responses to each question.

"This is an engaging, fun contest for our fans," said Big Sur staffer Sally Smith who serves as the key administrator for the Big Sur's Facebook page. "Fans already actively engage on the site, offering stories about their runs, asking questions about our events, or responding to other comments. This contest rewards them for their involvement and loyalty."

The Big Sur Marathon's platinum sponsor ASICS kicked off the contest with their offer of 36 gear bags during the period leading up to November's Big Sur Half Marathon as a way to promote their product and increase participant awareness. Several other Marathon sponsors also joined in, offering GU Energy Labs packets, BODYGLIDE samples from the locally owned Treadmill running store, caps from Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, books from Runner's World and coupons from Earthbound Farm.

The response from Big Sur Marathon Facebook fans was fast and positive. Greg Itahara, from Chicago, IL, remarked, "You guys have the best sponsors to help out with this contest!" Todd Robertson of Syracuse, NY, posted, "Yours is the best Facebook page going! Some of the other events that I have 'Liked' or 'Friended' really only get active near the race itself. Yours is active year round! Love it!"

The 12-week contest will culminate the weekend of the Big Sur Half Marathon. A special VIP package including a full complement of ASICS merchandise will be awarded to one lucky winner at the Health & Fitness Expo on Saturday, November 13.
