Athletics: Details Announced for 2012 Canada Army Run -- 5th Anniversary of Fastest Growing Run in Canada

New Date, New Registration Caps, New Initiatives

Ottawa (February 2) -- Organizers of Canada Army Run today announced details of the 2012 edition, including a new date, new registration caps, and new initiatives to mark the 5th Anniversary of this popular event, which sold out last year with 16,000 participants.

Among the details announced:

1) New Date. September 23rd (the fourth Sunday in September instead of the usual third Sunday). This year's run will take place the weekend after the Battle of Britain ceremonies and the Terry Fox Run.

2) New Registration Caps. 18,000 (8,500 for the half marathon; 9,500 for the 5K).

3) Opening of Registration. February 3, 2012 at ArmyRun.ca.

4) New Initiatives, including:

  • New finishers' medals styled after the official Canadian military identification disks ("dog tags");
  • Race-Day technical T-shirts featuring the 5th Anniversary logo;
  • Introduction of a Visually Impaired category in the Disabled Athletes division for the 5K and half marathon;
  • Introduction of a Hand Cycle category in the Disabled Athletes division for the half marathon.

QUOTES:

1) Commander of the Canadian Army Lieutenant-General Peter Devlin.
"Our decision to change the date was driven largely in response to concerns about Canada Army Run happening on the same day as two other large Ottawa events: the Battle of Britain ceremonies and the Terry Fox Run. Having experienced unprecedented growth, and out of respect for these other significant events, Canada Army Run sought permission from the National Capital Commission to change the date. We are thrilled to welcome participants and supporters to Ottawa September 23."

2) Run Director Major Luc Frenette
"The growth of this run has been truly phenomenal. We again expect to sell out this year, so I encourage people to register early to secure their spot and avoid being disappointed."

About Canada Army Run

Canada Army Run is a unique running event in which Canadians run, walk, or roll side-by-side with members of the Canadian Forces in half marathon and 5K events. Launched in 2008 with 7,000 runners (a Canadian record for the largest number of entrants for an inaugural run), this event is expected to grow to become a North American destination run. Fundraising efforts and proceeds benefit Soldier On and the Military Families Fund. The 2012 Canada Army Run is scheduled for Sunday, September 23.
